It is a sad fact, our World War II veterans are passing away at the rate of over 1000 per day. The veterans are truly a "National Treasure," and a number of these veterans live in the Roanoke area.
The time has come to give these “National Treasures” an opportunity to share their stories with an eager public.
The William Byrd High School History Department in partnership with The 8th Air Force Roanoke Historical Society are planning to honor these Veterans on Memorial Weekend Saturday the 26th. This free event gives us a chance to say "thank you" to these brave men and women who did so much.
Veterans from all branches who served in WWII will be out in force to recount their adventures, sign autographs and display their personal artifacts in the air conditioned gym.
A large collection of WW II Uniforms will be on display along with Radio controlled WW II model aircraft with some being flown in the football stadium. Military vehicles of various types will be on display in the parking lot along with living history reinactors camping nearby. In the auditorium historic military films will be shown throughout the day. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the event.
A special ceremony “Heroes Remembrance” will be held at 3:30 in the stadium to remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
